YOUR HEART HEALTH DESERVES SPECIALIZED ATTENTION

Comprehensive cardiovascular care, advanced diagnostic evaluation, preventive cardiology, and interventional expertise in the heart of Manhattan.

A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

At Park Avenue Medicine & Surgery, we believe cardiovascular care should extend beyond identifying and treating heart disease. It should help patients understand their cardiovascular risks, manage existing conditions, and make informed decisions about their long-term health.

Our Cardiovascular Medicine service combines clinical cardiology, cardiovascular imaging, risk assessment, and access to specialized interventional treatment when medically appropriate.

Whether you are concerned about high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, chest discomfort, palpitations, shortness of breath, or a known cardiovascular condition, our goal is to provide comprehensive evaluation and individualized care.

We emphasize early detection, preventive medicine, evidence-based treatment, and coordination with your primary care physician and other specialists.

PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY

PROTECTING YOUR HEART BEFORE DISEASE PROGRESSES

Cardiovascular disease may develop gradually, sometimes without noticeable symptoms.

Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and atherosclerosis can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, and heart failure.

Our preventive cardiology approach focuses on identifying and managing modifiable risk factors.

Depending on your individual circumstances, your evaluation may include:

  • Blood pressure assessment

  • Cholesterol and lipid evaluation

  • Cardiovascular risk estimation

  • Review of family history

  • Diabetes and metabolic risk assessment

  • Weight and lifestyle evaluation

  • Tobacco and nicotine exposure assessment

  • Medication management

  • Nutrition and exercise counseling

  • Selection of additional diagnostic testing when clinically indicated

Preventive cardiology is particularly valuable for individuals with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, a strong family history of premature heart disease, or established cardiovascular disease.

CONDITIONS WE EVALUATE AND MANAGE

Hypertension

High blood pressure is a major contributor to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, and other cardiovascular complications.

Management may involve home blood pressure monitoring, medication adjustments, lifestyle interventions, and evaluation of contributing medical conditions.

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque accumulates in the arteries supplying the heart.

Our cardiology service evaluates symptoms and risk factors associated with coronary artery disease and helps determine when medication, additional testing, or referral for invasive evaluation is appropriate.

Hyperlipidemia

Elevated LDL cholesterol and certain other lipid abnormalities contribute to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

We offer individualized risk assessment and treatment planning, including lipid-lowering therapy when clinically indicated.

Cardiac Arrhythmias

Palpitations, irregular heartbeats, unexplained episodes of rapid heart rate, dizziness, and certain forms of fainting may warrant cardiac evaluation.

Assessment may include an EKG, appropriate rhythm monitoring, echocardiography, or additional testing.

Heart Failure

Heart failure may cause shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, and reduced exercise tolerance.

Our cardiovascular team can evaluate cardiac function, review existing therapies, and coordinate ongoing management or advanced specialty treatment as appropriate.

Valvular Heart Disease

Heart valve disorders may interfere with normal blood flow and cardiac function.

Echocardiography and clinical assessment help characterize valve abnormalities and guide monitoring or referral for intervention when appropriate.

ADVANCED CARDIAC DIAGNOSTIC TESTING

UNDERSTANDING YOUR HEART THROUGH MODERN DIAGNOSTICS

Diagnostic testing can provide information about cardiac structure, function, rhythm, and circulation.

Tests may include:

Electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG)

A noninvasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart and helps identify certain rhythm abnormalities and other cardiac findings.

Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)

An ultrasound examination that evaluates heart chamber size, pumping function, valve structure and function, and selected hemodynamic findings.

Cardiac Rhythm Monitoring

Selected patients with intermittent palpitations, dizziness, or suspected arrhythmias may benefit from monitoring beyond a standard EKG.

Stress Testing

Exercise or pharmacologic stress testing may be recommended for selected clinical indications. The appropriate test is determined by the physician and arranged through a suitably equipped facility when needed.

Vascular Doppler Ultrasound

Ultrasound assessment of selected arteries and veins may help identify circulatory abnormalities contributing to vascular disease.

Not every patient requires every test. Diagnostic studies are selected according to symptoms, clinical findings, relevant guidelines, and medical necessity.

PREOPERATIVE CARDIOVASCULAR EVALUATIONS

HELPING PATIENTS PREPARE FOR SURGERY

Patients with known cardiovascular disease, significant risk factors, or symptoms concerning for cardiac disease may require specialized evaluation before certain surgical procedures.

At Park Avenue Medicine & Surgery, cardiovascular assessments may be coordinated for patients undergoing orthopedic, spine, vascular, general surgical, and other procedures.

An evaluation may involve:

  • Review of cardiovascular medical history

  • Review of previous cardiac testing

  • Evaluation of functional capacity

  • Assessment of blood pressure and heart rate

  • Review of cardiac medications and anticoagulants

  • Electrocardiography when indicated

  • Echocardiography or other testing when clinically justified

  • Communication with the surgeon and anesthesia team

  • Recommendations for cardiovascular risk reduction and perioperative management

The goal is to identify significant cardiovascular conditions, optimize care where possible, and provide an individualized assessment of perioperative risk.

Preoperative assessment does not necessarily require stress testing or additional imaging, and no evaluation can guarantee a risk-free procedure.

PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE

CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH EXTENDS BEYOND THE HEART

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) involves narrowing or blockage of arteries supplying the limbs, most commonly the legs.

Symptoms can include exertional calf discomfort, leg fatigue, reduced walking tolerance, nonhealing wounds, or pain in the feet at rest.

Evaluation may include:

  • Vascular examination

  • Ankle-brachial index (ABI)

  • Arterial Doppler ultrasound

  • Pulse volume recordings when indicated

  • Additional vascular imaging when necessary

Treatment may include cardiovascular risk reduction, supervised or structured exercise, medications, and selected catheter-based interventions for appropriate patients.

Patients requiring peripheral angiography, angioplasty, stenting, or other interventions may be treated in an appropriately equipped and credentialed setting.

INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY & COORDINATED PROCEDURAL CARE

Interventional cardiology uses catheter-based techniques to evaluate and treat selected cardiovascular conditions.

When a patient's condition warrants an invasive procedure, treatment planning considers the clinical diagnosis, available alternatives, procedural risks, and the most appropriate care setting.

Our cardiovascular program can coordinate indicated treatment at an appropriate office-based procedural facility, ambulatory surgery center, or hospital, depending on the procedure and the patient's medical needs.

Not every cardiovascular intervention is appropriate for an office-based surgical facility. Coronary interventions and other hospital-level procedures are coordinated in authorized hospital settings.

COORDINATED CARE ACROSS SPECIALTIES

ONE PRACTICE. A MORE COMPLETE VIEW OF YOUR HEALTH.

Cardiovascular conditions often overlap with other medical concerns, including diabetes, obesity, chronic pain, kidney disease, and reduced mobility.

Our multidisciplinary approach allows cardiovascular assessments and treatment recommendations to be coordinated with primary care, pain management, procedural medicine, and other specialties.

This is especially valuable when patients have complex medical histories or are considering an elective procedure.
