Capital Equipment: Is Buying Refurbished Medical Equipment Worth It?
Written By: Laila Ibrahim and Eshrat Quader
Capital equipment is a tangible asset that a company utilizes to provide services, or produce goods. For a product to qualify as “Capital Equipment”, it must meet three specific requirements; the first being a long life, meaning the product must provide service for at least a year. The second criterion is a high acquisition cost, which ranges depending on the size of the company (smaller companies may have lower acquisition costs). The final criterion is the asset’s ability to generate revenue over time (Legal Clarity).
Without such assets, industries would fail to provide the proper services. Especially the medical industry. Capital medical equipment is used each and every day to diagnose and treat patients (Med One group).
But what happens when necessary equipment is too expensive for a growing practice? There are a couple options for smaller, such as equipment rental, or, purchasing refurbished equipment.
To some, refurbished technology may be a red flag. Many believe that a product loses its value and ability to function properly once it's used to the point of refurbishment. But that’s not always the case! Refurbished equipment can be a great way for smaller and growing practices to save money and provide great service.
The main issue with purchasing refurbished equipment has more to do with the purchasing process rather than the equipment itself.
A small non-invasive surgery practice such as Park Ave Medicine & Surgery, has found that refurbished equipment works just as well as newly made equipment, if purchased from the right company. Doing business with Peak Medical Solutions, has solidified trust in refurbished medical equipment.
But, who knows better than an account manager at Peak Medical Solutions? We decided to interview Justin Lerner, to get a more informed idea of the pros (and even some cons) or refurbished medical equipment, and things that Physicians should look out for when deciding to purchase refurbished equipment.
Peak Medical Solutions is a company that refurbishes medical equipment and resells it to Physicians, saving them up to 40% or more, as told to us by Justin. The company has been running for about six years, and they offer services, such as repairs, rentals, and equipment reselling, along with their equipment refurbishment. In addition, they also provide trade in value for existing equipment, giving physicians and opportunity to recover value from outdated or unused devices.
According to Justin, the company prides itself on a completely transparent buying and selling process. In order to make the process easier and more rewarding for physicians and their small practices, he suggested to remain weary of hidden costs, and warned against buying equipment without warranty. He also stated that buying equipment online, instead of a real source such as Peak Medical Solutions, can cause physicians to lose money on repairs in the near future.
It’s important to purchase equipment from a company that has certified technicians who can ensure a piece of technology is up to OEM standards.
Another important fiscal decision for smaller practices to consider, are their tax write offs! Justin believes that it’s more beneficial for a business to take a 100% write off, rather than a depreciation, it can improve cash flow, and free up resources for additional equipment to be bought in the future. That being said, it makes more sense to buy a discounted piece of equipment, rather than a new one, as it may be much more expensive to immediately write it off.
It’s also good to keep in mind that some brands hold their value better than others. When making a purchasing decision, consider things such as user friendliness, strong trade-in value, and reliable service support.
Pro-Tip for Readers:
If a physician could ask a vendor a tough question, it should be “What other physicians have you worked with?” Doctors trust other doctors, referrals and networks are everything.
Peak Medical Solutions stands out because they offer one-year warranty, involve physicians before the purchase, and can help practices save 40% or more on equipment. Take it from Dr.Karan Johar! He was given the opportunity, by Justin, to see the test equipment before the purchase.
Peak Medical Solutions builds strong bonds with physicians through their transparent purchasing process.
Justin states that “buying from a third party is not a bad thing!” as it can greatly benefit physician owned centers, and help them deliver high quality care.
